Ben Schumaker, Director of an organisation called The Memory Project, has organised American students to create portraits for all of the children living in the Widhya Asih orphanages as a special gift honouring their self-identity. The program ia a unique initiative in which high school art students create portraits for children in orphanages around the world.
To make the portraits for the kids, we took digital photos showing each of the children's smiling faces, which were sent to The Memory Project. Ben distributed the photos to different art schools in America and portraits were created by the students.
On April 5th - 11th, 2001, The Memory Project delivered the portraits to our kids. they travelled around Bali to each of our orphanages and gave each child his/ her picture. As the purpose of the portraits is to provide the kids with a special memory of their youth, to honour their heritage and identity, and to help them build a positive self-image, they brought happiness to our children's faces when they receives 3 portraits of themselves.
